What?

iMovie is a video editing program, allowing you to shoot, edit and create your own videos. For this project we used a function within iMovie in which you can shoot your own movie trailer. iMovie tells you the duration and type of shot for each scene so all you have to do is follow the instructions and shoot your video. Once your done recording, iMovie does all the editing and produces a movie trailer.

So What?

iMovie is extremely engaging. For a generation in which videos are taking over the internet, having students write, shoot, edit and create videos is effective and interesting, especially for an unmotivated student. The iste.nets standard that best fits this is:

Having students create a video not only facilitates creativity, but it also requires them to learn the content and reflect about what they already learned.

Now What?

Students now have a way to creatively organize and present information. Having them use iMovie provides an authentic learning experience that they will enjoy. Included on this page is an example of the movie trailer program on iMovie.

Moving forward I intend to show and allow students to use iMovie. For example, I assigned a chemistry project in which students had to research an element. They then have to present information about their element. Allowing them to utilize iMovie is another way to have them creatively learn about the elements. Students have already proposed ideas such as make a music video about their element and create an online dating profile for the element.

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

c. Promote student reflection using collaborative
tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual
understanding and thinking, planning, and
creative processes.

Here's an example of using iMovie's movie trailer function. The following movie preview was shot and edited on an iPad.
